Occipital Nerve Blocks

Treatment Overview

An occipital nerve block is a simple injection used to relieve pain from the occipital nerves. Occipital nerves are at the back of your head and extend up to your scalp. This treatment helps manage chronic headaches, such as migraines, cluster headaches, and occipital neuralgia.

The procedure involves injecting a local anesthetic and a corticosteroid near the greater and lesser occipital nerves. The anesthetic numbs the area, providing quick pain relief. The corticosteroid reduces inflammation and helps maintain longer-lasting relief. Pain relief can last from a few days to a few months

Who Can Benefit

You may benefit from this treatment if you experience:
  • Chronic migraines that do not respond to oral medications

  • Occipital neuralgia, a condition characterized by sharp, throbbing pain at the base of the skull

  • Cluster headaches that cause intense pain around one eye or one side of the head

  • Tension headaches that do not improve with conservative treatments

  • Head and neck pain linked to nerve inflammation or irritation
